Diesel Truck Tips

This section of our site is dedicated to helping all of our customers achieve maximum reliability, fuel mileage, and performance out of their diesel.

  • Always keep in mind that you are driving a LOW RPM motor. Diesels work best generally between 1700 and 2500 RPMs. Their highest torque is here as is the best mileage numbers. If you push your diesel much past this range regularly, you are much more likely to develop “issues” that can be costly.
  • Try keeping your speed on the freeway at 65-70 MPH. In our experience most diesels pushed just 10 MPH over this recommended speed lost an average of 3-6 MPG!

Killer Dowel Pin (Dodge Owners)

The “killer dowel pin” as it’s called is a design flaw found on all Cummins from 1994-1998 and can cause major failure like these pictures shown here. The pin comes loose from its keeper inside the front timing cover, then gets wedged in between the cover and the cam gear causing the cover the break apart. This usually results in a repair costing between $1400-$2000. It can be eliminated for around $400 by Freedom Diesels as a preventative measure. Call us for more details.

FORD 2003-2007 OWNERS

This is how the heads have to come off a 6.0 diesel engine and most of the time the head gaskets fail from the driver being too aggressive with the truck. Although the 6.0 has issues with head gasket failures stock a lot of issues are caused by the WRONG performance products. Most of the time we recommend head studs rather than bolts when doing this job. Treat your 6.0 gentle or it will bite you back.
