Little White Lie

Performance can be measured in many different ways. Typically when it comes to diesel engines we tend to talk about performance in terms of horsepower and torque butut performance should also include the topic of fuel economy which is sometimes discussed as a separate topic. You can increase horsepower, torque and fuel economy and purchase the same bolt on/plug in parts to do it. But there’s a catch. You have to be honest with your self when it comes to your true motivation when you increase performance. If you’re a “stop light to stop light” guy and love the feel of getting pushed back in the seat then you’re probably not going to see any increase in mileage. If you’re looking to save every drop of fuel you can then you’ll probably never going to use the horse power you’re capable of producing. In other words you can get all three, but not usually at the same time.

So ask yourself what your motivation is and be prepared to tell a little white lie if you motivation is driven by your need for speed. If you have to run these purchases by your significant other and you justify the purchase with “increased fuel economy” be prepared that explaining getting your investment back in fuel savings might be a lie. If that same significant other pays the monthly fuel bill and doesn’t see the savings you promised her, just smile and describe to her how you painted the front of a Hemi black with the soot from the back of your truck as you left the light and apologize for telling a “little white lie.”
